Romney Sister: Mitt Will Not Ban Abortion

Thursday, 30 August 2012 10:17 AM EDT

Mitt Romney's eldest sister says a federal ban on abortion "is never going to happen" under a Romney administration, saying the issue is not on her brother's agenda.

"He’s not going to be touching any of that. It’s not his focus," Jane Romney told the National Journal, during an interview following a “Women for Mitt” event at the Republican National Convention.

“Mitt’s much more in the middle” when it comes to abortion, she added.

Jane Romney, who in the past has backed Democratic candidates, told the Journal that she believes "life is sacred" and that women wanting abortions should receive counseling. But she said safe and legal abortion should be available and American women would never accept a complete ban.

“Women would take to the streets,” Jane, who lives in Los Angeles, told the Journal. “Women fought for our choice, we’re not going to go back."
