Robin Williams Emmy Tribute by Billy Crystal a Heartfelt One

Robin Williams' Emmy tribute from his longtime friend Billy Crystal was a heartfelt one.

Following a musical performance by Sara Barrieles, who performed "Smile" during the In Memoriam slideshow during Monday's 66th annual Primetime Emmy Awards, Crystal took to the stage to say a few words about how special Williams was to friends and family, to the American viewership, and to him.

"As genius as he was on stage, he was the greatest friend you could ever imagine," said Crystal, "It is very hard to talk about him in the past tense because he was so present in all of our lives."

Crystal, who co-founded the "Comic Relief" specials with Williams and Whoopi Goldberg to benefit the homeless, spoke of his friend's innate ability to create laughter wherever he went. Recalling a baseball game the three of them attended together, he said Williams was ignorant of the sport, but quickly harnessed that ignorance into comedy to the delight of all around him.

"I asked him, 'What's your favorite team?' and he said, 'The San Franciscos,'" Crystal explained.

Pretending to be a Russian baseball player, Williams quipped, "We only have one team in my country — the Reds."

"He could be funny anywhere," Crystal concluded.

"For almost 40 years, he was the brightest star in the comedy galaxy," he exclaimed, transitioning into a few clips of Williams at his best.

"But while some of the brightest of our celestial bodies are actually extinct now, their energy long since cooled. But miraculously they must float in the heavens so far away from us, their beautiful light will continue to shine on us forever. And the glow will be so bright it will warm your heart, it will make your eyes glisten, and you'll think to yourselves, 'Robin Williams, what a concept.'"

No stranger to the Emmys, Williams was nominated 8 times throughout his career, taking home awards in 1987 and 1988 for his work on variety shows. The Huffington Post noted that he gave his own tribute to "Mork & Mindy" co-star Jonathan Winters just last year.
