A roasted pig stuffed into the checked luggage of an Ecuador traveler was sniffed out by a beagle from the U.S. Customs and Border Protection's K-9 unit at Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport on Thursday, Fox 5 Atlanta reported.

Pork and pork products are prohibited from entering the U.S. from other continents due to the risk of spreading disease such as foot and mount disease and swine fever.

Travelers are required to declare any food products, The Atlanta Journal Constitution added, so when Hardy the 6-year-old rescue beagle caught a whiff of the pork, he immediately alerted his handler.

Agents seized and destroyed the pig, and Hardy received all the praise.

"Our best defense against destructive pests and animal diseases is to prevent the entry of prohibited agriculture products from entering the United States," said Carey Davis, CBP Area Port Director for the Port of Atlanta, according to Fox 5. "This seizure at ATL illustrates the tremendous expertise of our four-legged K-9 partners in protecting the United States."

Hardy joined the Customs and Border Protection's K-9 unit at the Atlanta airport three years ago, upon completion of his U.S. Department of Agriculture training, The Miami Herald reported.

The pooch is a member of the "Beagle Brigade," which was established in 1984 by the U.S. Department of Agriculture as part of its detector dog program, the U.S. Customs and Border Patrol noted.

Beagles are ideal candidates for the job because of their keen sense of smell and also their non-threatening size and sweet nature.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture screens around 300 to 500 potential recruits a year but about 75 make the final cut, the Sun-Sentinel said. Only 55 to 65 complete their training while the others are adopted.
