Ridley Scott reportedly plans to follow his upcoming biblical epic, "Exodus: Gods and Kings," with another faith-based project – a big-screen version of the story of King David.

According to Variety, Scott's production company, Scott Free, will team with 20th Century Fox and Chernin Entertainment to produce a movie featuring David, the biblical hero who became the king of Israel after killing Goliath.

The movie, however, will highlight David's reign as king rather than the infamous battle with the giant, the entertainment magazine noted.

It's not yet clear whether Scott would direct the picture or just produce it.

A film about King David makes sense for the studios from a business standpoint, as religious and faith-based movies have been raking in record numbers at the box office over the last year.

"Religious movies have been hot at the box office this year in part because the current boomlet follows a drought. Studios also aim to lock in sales by church groups, resulting in an opening-weekend pop that can drive positive word of mouth, a crucial element of successful movie releases," The New York Times reported in April when "Heaven Is for Real" opened.

"The other three hits so far this year have been 'Noah,' 'Son of God,' and 'God’s Not Dead.' More religious movies are on the way, including Ridley Scott’s 'Exodus: Gods and Kings,' which is scheduled for release in December."

Fittingly, the first teaser trailer for "Exodus: Gods and Kings" was released online this week, giving audiences a sneak peek at the film that tells the Old Testament story of the Israelites' exodus from Egypt. Christian Bale stars as Moses, alongside Sigourney Weaver, Ben Kingsley, Aaron Paul, and Joel Edgerton.

"Exodus: Gods and Kings" is slated to hit theaters Dec. 20.
