Rick Perry Tweet: Texas Gov. Retracts 'Drunk Democrat' Post About DA

By    |   Tuesday, 02 Sep 2014 08:45 AM

Rick Perry retracted a tweet posted to his Twitter account over the holiday weekend, calling the post inappropriate.

"A tweet just went out from my account that was unauthorized. I do not condone the tweet and I have taken it down," the Texas governor wrote Sunday.

According to CNN, the original post was a Photoshopped picture of Travis County district attorney Rosemary Lehmberg, in which an unflattering picture of her face was placed on the shoulders of the Dos Equis character "The Most Interesting Man in the World." Several Twitter users captured pictures of Perry's tweet before it was removed.

"I don't always drive drunk at 3 times the legal blood alcohol limit, but when I do I indict Governor Perry for calling me out about it. I am the most drunk democrat in Texas," read text that overlaid the picture.

The original tweet was posted around 7:20 p.m. on Sunday, and was deleted after just a few minutes. The retraction statement was issued at 8:20 p.m.

The photo of Lehmberg appears to have come from police footage of her detainment for drunk driving in 2013, for which she was eventually convicted. Perry vetoed funding for her office following her conviction after she refused to resign.

He announced his intention to veto the funds ahead of signing it, which led to his indictment this month by a grand jury in Austin. The grand jury, which was not in fact led by Lehmberg's office, claimed that the veto threat (but not the veto itself) was an abuse of government power.

Many legal commentators and pundits, both conservative and liberal, have labeled the indictment as flimsy, as the threat of veto is implied by the ability to veto in the first place.
