Richard Gere and wife Carey Lowell are splitting up, putting an end to their 11-year marriage, multiple media outlets reported Wednesday.

The couple had begun to go their separate ways in recent years, which is the reason for the split, an insider told the New York Post's Page Six.

"They have a place in Bedford [NY], and he likes it because it's quiet and he likes the solitude," the insider said. "She likes being in North Haven in the limelight. They live next door to Jimmy Buffett and his family, and they're good friends."

Gere, 64, and model/actress Lowell, 52, had been together 18 years. Page Six reported that the pair hadn't been photographed together since a Hamptons screening of Gere's Wall Street thriller "Arbitrage" last year. A source told the paper that there was no timetable for when they would actually file for divorce.

Gere and Lowell share a 12,000-square-foot, 12-bedroom house in North Haven. Called Strongheart Manor, it was listed for $65 million in July. Gere is also an owner of the lavish Bedford Post Inn.

Gere had previously been married to model Cindy Crawford, and is Lowell's third husband, after fashion photographer John Stember and actor Griffin Dunne. Gere and Lowell have a son together, 13-year-old Homer, and Lowell also has a 23-year-old daughter, Hannah, with Dunne.

"They'll do everything possible to keep things amicable and put their child first," a friend of the couple told People magazine, while confirming the split.

Lowell has had roles in "Leaving Las Vegas" and "Sleepless in Seattle."

Gere is known for his roles in the 1982 film "An Officer and a Gentleman," 1980's "American Gigolo," and 1990's "Pretty Woman," among many others.

He begins production in October in Philadelphia on the independent movie "Franny," in which he'll play "a hedonistic philanthropist who ingratiates himself into the lives of a newlywed couple in order to re-create the life he once had," Variety says.

Another superstar couple in the news recently for marital troubles is Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones. The two separated last month, and appeared headed for divorce, though a Wednesday report by People says they were working to reconcile.
