It started out as just another Sunday morning for model and actress Paulina Porizkova, who awoke and headed to the kitchen of her Manhattan home to make coffee for her husband, rocker Ric Ocasek.

However, when she brought a cup to him, she knew something was not right.

In a post to Instagram, Porizkova recalled the moment she discovered Ocasek, lead singer for The Cars, had died.

"I found him still asleep when bringing him his Sunday morning coffee," she wrote. "I touched his cheek to rouse him. It was then I realized that during the night he had peacefully passed on."

According to her post, Ocasek was at home recuperating from unspecified surgery and was enjoying downtime with their two sons, "ordering food and watching TV together."

She added that her husband's "untimely and unexpected death" had left friends and family "completely and utterly devastated."

Ocasek's sons Jonathan and Oliver honored their father in a heartfelt message that was shared to The Cars' Instagram account, along with a picture he had drawn.

"Our dad was a prolific doodler," the two boys wrote. "His passing was sudden, unexpected, and beyond heartbreaking. Yesterday, we found this last doodle on his armchair. He couldn't have known what it would end up meaning to us. We love him so much."

Tributes from other prominent artists and musicians have been flooding social media since news broke of Ocasek's death.

The Red Hot Chili Peppers' bassist Flea called the iconic rocker "an interesting, smart, kind, funny man who made incredible records," while Dee Snider recounted the last time the two had spoken.

"Ran into Ric on the streets of NYC last year and we had a nice chat. Just two guys/no fanfare. I'll always remember it," Snider said.

The New York City medical examiner revealed that Ocasek died of heart disease, worsened by emphysema.

In a statement, Ocasek's family said they appreciated "the great outpouring of love" and requested "the privacy to mourn in private."
