Rev. Juan D. McFarland Didn't Disclose AIDS to Churchgoers He Slept With

Rev. Juan D. McFarland, a pastor in Montgomery, Alabama, told church members that he has AIDS and confessed to sleeping with with women churchgoers without telling them he had the disease, WSFA News reports.

McFarland, who was removed from his pastoral position at Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church on Oct. 5, first told church members from the pulpit that he had contracted HIV in 2003 and in 2008 was diagnosed with AIDS.

“The church was very accepting of Reverend McFarland and was willing to help him in any way possible," a church member told WSFA.

But then McFarland returned to the pulpit and admitted to having sexual relations with women in the church.

"He concealed from the church that he had knowingly engaged in adultery in the church building with female members of Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church while knowingly having AIDS," Nathan Williams Jr., a deacon, told WSFA.

The church and the community are stunned and still grappling with the implications, in particular the fact that no one is sure how many women may have been exposed to AIDS.

"I know a young lady who is a member of the church who says she has slept with him and that she didn't want this to go public, and she [is] running out now trying to find out if there is anything wrong with her," a member who preferred to remain anonymous told WSFA. "And my heart goes out to her because she's been a wonderful church member, and then for something like this to happen. The fact that he didn't tell them at all. That's a crime in itself."

Among McFarland’s other confessions from the pulpit were illegal drug use and taking church money.
