Redmond Bottle Bomb Injures Two Bus Drivers, Closes School

By    |   Tuesday, 04 Nov 2014 06:55 AM

Two bus drivers at Redmond's Emily Dickinson Elementary School in Washington state were blasted by a bottle bomb placed in the parking lot before the drivers set out to pick up the kids and begin the day.

According to KIRO-TV, the King County Sheriff's Office reported that one driver was hit with plastic shards, sustaining minor injuries, while the other experienced possible chemical exposure. Both were taken to the hospital out of an abundance of caution. The incident occurred around 7:30 a.m.

The sheriff's office said the "acid bomb" was made from a 2-liter soda bottle and common household cleaning products – likely the work of adolescent pranksters who actually paid attention in chemistry class.

"I don’t know what drives teenage boys to do these kinds of things, but that’s typically who’s doing them," said Sgt. DB Gates, The Seattle Times reported.

Gates did not name the kind specific acid, but said it was similar to the kind used to clean concrete.

Roughly 30 students were in the school at the time of the explosion for an early morning orchestra practice, said Kathryn Reith, spokeswoman for Lake Washington Schools.

After the explosion the school closed down for the day, and school administrators sent home a note explaining that no one suffered serious injury during the bottle bomb incident, and that nearby Evergreen Middle School was in modified lockdown due to the nearby police activity.
