Record-Breaking Rainbow Appears for 9 Hours in Taiwan

A record-breaking rainbow appeared for almost nine hours in Taiwan on Thursday. The phenomenon was meticulously recorded by professors and students of the Chinese Culture University in Taipei, who hope to submit their findings to the Guinness Book of records, BBC noted.

The previous world record was set in 1994 in Yorkshire, England, and lasted six hours, CBS News said.

Thursday's rainbow clocked in at eight hours and 58 minutes.

According to The Guardian, the professors were initially monitoring the rainbow to test a theory that the bands of light begin to descend as time moves on.

Rainbows usually only last for a short period of time so when this arc wore on, professor Chou Kun-hsuan and his colleague Liu Ching-huang rounded up their students and began to photograph and document the spectacular sight.

"It was amazing… It felt like a gift from the sky... It's so rare!" Kun-hsuan told BBC. "When we broke the previous record after passing six hours, I was hardly able to stay seated for lunch; it was around lunchtime. I was so excited; I wanted to make sure we captured the rainbow. But then it did something even more incredible; it went on to beat the previous record by another three hours!"

The record-breaking rainbow was influenced by a seasonal monsoon wind that trapped moist air, causing it to condense and form clouds and rain, The Daily Mail reported.

The extended appearance of the rainbow was caused by the monsoon's wind that was traveling slowly from the northeast to the region.

The phenomenon was accompanied by three other rainbows reaching over Taipei's mountains.

"Besides the two main rainbows that are easily observed, the other two are known as supernumerary rainbows, which are less obvious to see due to the difference in the size of rain drops," Kun-hsuan said, according to The Daily Mail.
