Michael Reagan, the elder son of the late President Ronald Reagan, Tuesday told Fox News the disappointed reaction Chris Matthews displayed when discussing his father being chosen by Americans as their favorite president in a Gallup Presidents Day poll shows how “out of touch” the MSNBC host is with the mainstream public.

“It seems unless there is the tingling going up his leg he really doesn’t feel it,” Reagan told Fox News’ Megyn Kelly, alluding to a comment Matthews once made about his reaction to President Barack Obama’s speeches. “It just shows you really how out of touch he is.”

On the same night MSNBC aired Matthews’ special on President Clinton, “President of the World: The Bill Clinton Phenomenon,” the “Hardball” host Monday said:

“The greatest president in history according to the American people with their limited memory is Ronald Reagan. Keep in mind these are not historian rankings, these are people’s. By the way you should insist, before anybody participates in one of these ridiculous polls — please list the presidents and then pick the best.

“Don’t just go with the ones you can remember,” Matthews said. “It’s like the greatest movie of all time was the one I just went to.”

Reagan hypothesized the reason Matthews was so troubled his father was America’s favorite is the MSNBC host’s preferred presidents didn’t top the list, adding Matthews “thinks he’s always right and unfortunately he’s always wrong.”

“The reason they loved Ronald Reagan is because Ronald Reagan loved them,” Reagan said.
