Overworked sewage pipes that dumped raw sewage into the locker rooms at the Oakland Coliseum forced the Oakland A’s to share a locker room with the Seattle Mariners on Sunday.
The pipes backed up on the lower levels of the stadium, ESPN reported, creating a disgusting mess in the clubhouses used by the teams and umpires. The teams moved to a higher floor.
Coliseum officials said the problem was caused by a six days of games, when more than 170,000 fans were using the plumbing.

“Make sure everybody finds out about this sewage thing,” Oakland starter A.J. Griffin told ESPN. “We need to get a new stadium.”
Indeed, blogs and stories showed up almost immediately, pointing out the age of the Oakland Coliseum and how it needs to be replaced. The stadium is 47 years old.
ESPN’s Buster Olney opened his blog post with a quote from Brad Pitt in “Moneyball”: “There are rich teams and there are poor teams. Then there’s 50 feet of crap ... and then there’s us.”
In his blog, Olney called the incident “an embarrassment for baseball,” pointing out that the sewage issues have been going on for some time.
At the SF Gate, a Chronicle staff writer quoted team President
Michael Crowley as answering a question about the need for a new stadium, “It’s clear, right? This isn’t the first time this has happened.” The Angels filed a complaint about the unsanitary condition several years ago, concerned about possible E.coli contamination in the training room.
The facility is owned by the city of Oakland and Alameda County, and is run by a joint authority. The A’s have a lease, which expires after this season, SF Gate reported.
The situation itself was too good of an opportunity headline writers and Twitter followers to miss.
The A’s won, by the way, 10-2.
