Police are investigating the death of a 21-year-old Argentinian hip-hop star after she was found hanged inside her home days after posting cryptic messages to social media about fearing for her life.
The death of Paula Monica Gimenez, known artistically as "Gemma" or "Chiny," was initially ruled suicide, but investigators have now said she passed away under suspicious circumstances following the emergence of new information relating to a former boyfriend, identified as Franco by The Sun.
Gimenez had been celebrating Christmas with friends and family the day she was found dead. After leaving the party, Franco reportedly stayed at the hip-hop artist's home for 20 minutes. He later claimed she had threatened to hurt herself if he did not return. Franco contacted a friend and asked if he could check on Gimenez. She was found dead with a cable tied around her neck.
Franco was briefly detained. During questioning, he reportedly claimed to have broken up with Gimenez six months ago, adding that she often threatened self-harm while begging him to take her back. However, social media posts have since emerged in which Gimenez stated she was afraid that something may happen to her, Infobae reported.
Furthermore, Franco used fake Instagram accounts to threaten Gimenez, who had blocked his official profile, according to Misiones Online. WhatsApp messages revealed by local media further revealed Gimenez's fear as she spoke to an unidentified male believed to be a close friend or relative.
"Sir, Franco was at my house recently. He jumped over the gate and banged on my door like a madman. I did not attend to him and he left," she reportedly wrote, adding that her father was urging her to get a restraining order.
"But I'm going to ask you to please talk to him," Gimenez continued.
It is not clear whether or not she was referring to Franco.
