Rangel 'Crackers' Comment Compares Tea Party to Derogatory Term

Charlie Rangel compared Tea Party members to segregationist "white crackers" and Republicans to "terrorists" in a published assault on conservatives.

The long-serving Democratic congressman from New York, who was censured by his House colleagues in December 2010 for financial misconduct, assailed conservative Americans during a recent interview with The Daily Beast that was published on Friday.

"It is the same group we faced in the South with those white crackers and the dogs and the police," the 83-year-old Harlem congressman said of the Tea Party. "They didn’t care about how they looked. It was just fierce indifference to human life that caused America to say, 'Enough is enough. I don’t want to see it and I am not a part of it.' What the hell! If you have to bomb little kids and send dogs out against human beings, give me a break."

Rangel, who is mixed race with an African-American mother and Puerto Rican father, also blamed Republicans for opposition to immigration reform, attributing it to what he believed was a fear among white Americans whose percentage of the population continues to shrink as the nation becomes ever more diverse.

"Every white son of a gun from Europe has found a way to get here, and these barriers I think have a lot to do with color and the awkwardness or the uncomfortableness that a lot of whites feel about people of color," Rangel said to The Daily Beast.

Rangel's criticism of the Republican Party didn't end there.

When asked about the Republican-led House's opposition to the White House, Rangel, who was first elected to office some 43 years ago, compared their actions to those of al-Qaida.

"What is happening is sabotage," Rangel told The Daily Beast. "Terrorists couldn’t do a better job than the Republicans are doing.”

This is the second time in weeks that Rangel has made headlines, having in July told a Fox News reporter that the George Zimmerman acquittal in the killing of Trayvon Martin could be an invitation for white people to shoot young black men.

Rangel was censured by the House and stripped of his chairmanship of the House Ways and Means Committee after scandals including a rent-regulated apartment, taxes on a Dominican villa, and use of congressional stationery to fundraise for the school of public service at the City University of New York.

In 2012, he won the primary vote in a newly redrawn district by little more than a thousand votes.

On Monday, Real Estate mogul Donald Trump said Rep. Charlie Rangel should be forced to resign over his "white crackers" comment.

Calling the use of the derogatory term by the New York Democrat "a very rough double standard," Trump said on "Fox & Friends" that "if you're a Republican" and make a statement like that, "it's over."

"I mean, you are finished. If you're a conservative — by the way, the further right you are, the worse it gets. So, it's a very rough double standard," the real estate and entertainment billionaire continued.

"If Charlie, or if whoever it was, was a Republican, and they made that statement, they'd be resigning from office right now."
