Legendary country music singer Randy Travis made a rare appearance at Sunday’s Academy of Country Music awards, receiving a standing ovation after his presence was brought to the audience’s attention.

Lee Brice sang a few lines of Travis’ hit “Forever and Ever, Amen,” and then pointed to Travis, People magazine reported.

“That classic tune won song of the year in 1985 and the man who sang it has made an amazing comeback to be with us tonight. Ladies and gentlemen, the great Randy Travis," Brice said, referring to the severe stroke that has kept Travis out of the spotlight for two years.

Brice told Taste of Country earlier in the week that Travis, 55, was “one of the guys I looked up to my whole life.”

No one had been sure Travis would make it to the show, but his fiancée, Mary Davis, said it was an important event for the country star.

"Randy's history with the ACM awards goes back over two decades," Davis told People. "With the awards in Dallas and celebrating 50 years, it's something Randy and I would not miss."

On his website, Travis posted a thank you for the support he received at the ACM Awards. He entitled it, “Storms of Life…”

“It was an amazing gift to feel all of the love from you tonight in Dallas at the Academy of Country Music Awards. It has been a hard fought and miraculous journey since my stroke two years ago, and I have gained a greater understanding of God’s grace and how quickly events can change us,” Travis posted.

Many tweeted out their happiness at seeing Travis.

Travis’ letter said he hopes to once more return to the stage and to the career he loves.

“The power of music remains a source of inspiration and healing for me. Writing songs was always a passion of mine and I still have a lot to share with you,” he wrote.
