Deadly California wildfires are threatening the Raiders-Chargers matchup Sunday in Oakland, and NFL officials are considering moving the game to a different stadium.

Heavy smoke in the air is a concern for players and fans alike, according to CBS Sports, which noted ash could be seen floating in the air during a news conference Thursday.

Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara is a possible alternate venue.

At least 31 people have died and hundreds more remain missing as the California wildfires continue to burn.

In response to the smoke, some Raiders players wore face masks during shortened practices Wednesday and Thursday.

“We continue to monitor air quality conditions in the Bay Area and are in close communication with both the Raiders and Chargers, as well as local authorities,” league spokesperson Michael Signora said in a statement Thursday, The Orange County Register reported. “At this point, the game remains scheduled for Sunday in Oakland.”

San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer said he was open to hosting the game, however NFL spokesman said Joe Lockhart seemed to rule out that option, saying any move would likely be to an NFL stadium, The San Diego Union-Tribune reported. The Chargers moved to Los Angeles from San Diego this season.

Venues in the Bay Area and the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum are other possible locations, the Union-Tribune said.

"We’re still going to have to play. Doesn’t matter where," Chargers defensive end Chris McCain said, according to The Orange County Register.

More than 20 wildfires burning 190,000 acres in eight counties are fueled by 60 mph winds and low humidity. Entire neighborhoods in Santa Clara have been destroyed, and some people have died in their sleep as fires swept through the area.
