A raccoon reportedly attacked a 4-month-old baby in Philadelphia on Wednesday, leaving the infant bloodied and wounded to the point where the girl needed surgery and more than 60 stitches, WPVI-TV reported.

Ashley Rodgers, the mother of Journi Blake Rodgers, told authorities that the attack happened about 8:30 p.m. in their apartment in north Philadelphia, the television station noted. She said she was in the bathroom and her infant was asleep in a bed when she heard screaming and crying.

"My daughter was laying on the bed sleeping and I went to take my son to the bathroom. We heard a sound upstairs and we see a raccoon run down the steps," Rodgers told KYW-TV. "When I finally got to her, she was laying on the floor so it had dragged her off the bed, across the room, and she was bleeding and crying and her whole face was red.

The infant needed 64 stitches during surgery and a rabies shot, and was in fair condition at a local hospital, Rodgers told WPVI-TV.

"It's just ridiculous," Samuel Black, the girl's father, told KYW-TV. "My daughter could have lost her life. … It is (the landlord's) responsibility. There's no reason an animal should have gotten into the house with minors."

Local animal control officials told WPVI-TV that a trap was set inside the home to capture the animal. The Department of Licenses and Inspections also plans to investigate to determine if the home is safe to live in, per WPVI-TV.

Animal Care & Control Team spokeswoman Ajeenah Amir told Philly.com that officers could not find the raccoon.

"(Officers) were out again throughout (Thursday) to fully assess the building and monitor the traps," Amir told Philly.com.

Neighbors told KYW-TV that raccoon sighting were common in the area because of the trash.

"It's terrible around here with these raccoons, yes it is," neighbor Barbara Butler told KYW-TV.
