A man who has served as R. Kelly's personal "crisis manager" has resigned after making a damning statement about the singer.

Darrell Johnson, who has also been described as one of Kelly's public relations representatives and a spiritual advisor, created controversy on Monday during an interview on "CBS This Morning."

"Absolutely not," Johnson replied when asked by Gayle King whether he would feel comfortable leaving his own 20-something-year-old daughter alone with the singer, who was arrested earlier this month and indicted on 18 counts, including child pornography, and is being held in Chicago at the federal Metropolitan Correctional Center. "I wouldn't leave my daughter with anybody that's accused of pedophilia. Period."

King then pointed out that it seemed like a contradiction that Johnson, who CBS referred to as Kelly's "crisis manager," was quick to defend the singer while at the same time being reluctant to leave his daughter alone with him.

"I wouldn't leave my daughter with anyone. I'll say it again, [anyone] that's accused of being a pedophile," Johnson responded, per USA Today.

Johnson stepped down from repping Kelly later on Monday. He also did a complete reversal on his statement.

"I should have worded it better," Johnson told USA TODAY, adding that he meant to say, "I would leave my daughter with Kelly because I do not believe he is a pedophile."

During the interview, Johnson also expressed concerns over the shamed singer's mental health.

"Mr. Kelly is a mess," he said, adding that he assumed Kelly was under suicide watch.

Kelly's attorneys have said Johnson is not a lawyer or a member of the singer's defense team, with one saying he "has been acting as a PR person."
