Quentin Tarantino has a "Star Trek" idea and producer J.J. Abrams likes it enough that he is assembling a writer's room for it, The Wrap reported.

If Tarantino's idea, which has not been reported, pans out among the Abrams screenwriters, it could lead the Academy Award-winning movie maker to perhaps direct and install it as part of the "Star Trek" franchise, a source told The Wrap.

Tarantino has won Oscars for best original screenplay for "Pulp Fiction" in 1995 and in 2013 for "Django Unchained." He also has been nominated for best director Oscars for "Inglorious Bastards" in 2010 and "Pulp Fiction."

Deadline.com reported in November that Tarantino has already agreed to sign on with Sony to make a film dealing with Charles Manson's 1969 murder spree that included the death of actress Sharon Tate.

Margot Robbie has been asked to play Sharon Tate and Tom Cruise, Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt are being sought for male lead roles. Deadline.com said the film's release date would be Aug. 9, 2019, the 50th anniversary of Tate's death.

Manson, who spent the rest of his life in prison after being sentenced to nine life terms in 1970, died Nov. 19 of natural causes under the custody of the California Department of Corrections at 83, CNN reported.

Abrams took over the "Star Trek" movie franchise, directing and executive producing "Star Trek" in 2009, when it earned $385 million at the box office, according to Box Office Mojo.

The movie introduced a new younger cast of actors into the franchise, including Chris Pine as Captain Kirk, Zachary Quinto as Spock, and Karl Urban as Dr. McCoy.

"Star Trek Into Darkness," which was also directed and executive produced by Abrams, made $467 million globally at the box office in 2013. "Star Trek Beyond," which was released last year with Justin Lin directing, made $343 million worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo.

Abrams is also involved with the "Star Wars" franchise, having directed, co-wrote and produced "Star Wars: The Force Awakens," which made a whopping $2 billion at the box office, per Box Office Mojo.

The highly anticipated follow-up, "Star Wars: The Last Jedi," is scheduled to hit theaters Dec. 15.
