Reddit has reportedly banned a subreddit devoted to QAnon conspiracy theories, saying it repeatedly violated the site’s content policy.
An NBC News reporter tweeted about the purge Wednesday.
"As of September 12, r/greatawakening has been banned due to repeated violations of the terms of our content policy,” a Reddit spokesperson said in a statement to The Hill.
“We are very clear in our site terms of service that posting content that incites violence, disseminates personal information, or harasses will get users and communities banned from Reddit."
QAnon followers believe in a vague and far-reaching conspiracy theory that posits a “deep-state” plot against President Donald Trump and a vast pedophile ring among elites, The Hill noted.
According to The Verge, the ban is the second high-profile action aimed at a QAnon subreddit — a board called r/CBTS stream was banned last March for violating guidelines.
Some of the subreddit’s users have since regrouped on Reddit clone Voat, which takes a more hands-off approach to moderation, The Verge reported.
The QAnon conspiracy theory, which is based around cryptic internet comments from an anonymous poster known as “Q,” began on 4chan and 8chan but has incubated on Reddit, The Verge reported. Among its few high-profile supporters is Roseanne Barr, The Verge reported.
The ban comes a day after Reddit purged the popular “Million Dollar Extreme” subreddit for inciting violence, The Verge reported.
