Puppy Saves Girl, 4, Lost in Siberian Wilderness for 11 Days

A 4-year-old girl lost in the Siberian wilderness for 11 days was saved by her puppy, who apparently kept her warm during freezing nights and then gave rescuers the clues needed to find her.

Karina Chikitova left the village where she lived on July 29 to visit her father in a nearby hamlet, AFP reported. But her father had left the small hamlet, in which only eight people live, to fight a fire. With no means of communication in the rural area, the girl’s mother didn’t figure out for four days that her daughter must have gone into the forest to look for her father, AFP said.

Searchers began combing Russia’s Sakha region, but as days passed, many felt it was unlikely Chikitova would be found alive in an area so populated by bears that searchers wouldn’t go into the woods without special forces. In addition, the weather dropped below freezing at night.

When the girl’s puppy showed up at the hamlet, the searchers lost all hope, The Independent reported, because they had thought maybe the puppy cuddled up with her to keep her warm and safe.

“That was the moment when our hearts sank, because we thought at least with her dog Karina had chances to survive — night in Yakutia are cold and some areas have already gone into minus temperatures,” Afanasiy Nikolayev told the Independent. “If she was to hug her puppy, we thought, this would have given her a chance to stay warm during nights and survive.”

But searchers followed the puppy’s trail, finding the child two days later.

"We were sure that the puppy was next to the little girl all this time, warming her at night and scaring away wild animals," Afanasiy Nikolayev told Zvezda TV, according to AFP.

When they found her, Chikitova had no shoes and had lost a lot of weight. She told rescuers she ate berries and drank river water.

The girl is recovering at a hospital and is doing well.
