The Puerto Rico blackout that arose in the wake of Hurricane Maria last September is the second-worst to be recorded in world history, CNN reported.

The embattled island was left in the dark for months after the powerful storm tore through the American Caribbean territory.

Efforts to fully restore electricity continue and there are still at least 100,000 residents still without power in the blackout that has already been named the largest in American history and the second-largest in the world, a report from the Rhodium Group, an economic research firm, said.

Researchers arrived at that number after comparing blackouts based on the hours of lost power.

Based on this figure, researchers deduced that "Hurricane Maria surpassed all other U.S. blackouts in recorded history by causing over 1.2 billion lost customer-hours a little more than a month after the storm hit," the report said.

That number has grown to 3.4 billion as of the beginning of this week.

According to the report, more hours of power have been lost in Puerto Rico due to Hurricane Maria than in the rest of the U.S. over the past five years due to all causes combined.

The only blackout worse than Puerto Rico's is the one that occurred after Typhoon Haiyan slammed into Philippines in 2013, causing about 6.1 billion hours of power to be lost, CNN said.

Thousands were left dead and the region was plunged into a state of anarchy and disorder in the days following the storm as armed thieves roamed the stricken neighborhoods searching for food, The Telegraph reported.

In Puerto Rico, officials continue to work on a plan to strengthen and stabilize the power grid and are hoping to achieve this by June, NBC News reported.
