Prostate cancer laser therapy is being called "truly transformative" after the new treatment was found to have the ability to kill cancer cells.

This nonsurgical method of treatment is called vascular-targeted photodynamic therapy (VTP).

According to University College London Hospitals, patients treated with laser therapy also receive an injection into the bloodstream of a drug derived from deep sea bacteria, known as WST11. UCLH describes WST11 as “a compound that releases free radicals to kill surrounding cells when activated by laser light,” CNBC reported.

The bacteria contained in the drug seems to eliminate tumors without bringing about serious side effects for patients.

“This changes everything,” said professor Mark Emberton, who tested the laser therapy, BBC News reported.

The discovery was made during a trial involving more than 400 patients who were each injected with the light-sensitive drug.

Following the trial, at least half of the patients went into remission.

“These results are excellent news for men with early localized prostate cancer, offering a treatment that can kill cancer without removing or destroying the prostate,” said Mark Emberton, a University College London consultant urologist who led the trial, Fox News reported. “This is truly a huge leap forward.”

“The fact that the treatment was performed so successfully by non-specialist centers in various health systems is really remarkable,” Emberton added.

Prostate cancer is the second most common cancer in American men following skin cancer, says the American Cancer Society.

Emberton says the new therapy represents some hope for the future, though.

“New procedures are generally associated with a learning curve, but the lack of complications in the trial suggests that the treatment protocol is safe, efficient and relatively easy to scale up,” he said.
