Prince Philip was admitted to a hospital on Tuesday with an infection as a "precautionary measure," according to Buckingham Palace, but it has still garnered concern form the public.
The 96-year-old Duke of Edinburgh has been receiving treatment for the infection that arose from a pre-existing condition.
According to USA today, Philip has been in and out of the hospital in recent years for treatment for a heart condition.
The prince was said to be in good spirits however, he was unable to attend the Queen's Speech with his wife, Queen Elizabeth II, today. Instead, Prince Charles would accompany his mother to Parliament.
"Prince Philip is in good spirits and is disappointed to be missing the State Opening of Parliament and Royal Ascot," Buckingham Palace said in a statement, according to CNN.
Reporting at the Queens Speech, Skynews commentators remarked on how hard it must have been for the queen, who had to leave her husband's side to fulfil her duty.
Britain has been in the grip of a heat wave, and forecasters have said Wednesday's temperatures could make it the hottest day in 40 years.
The American Heart Association has warned that heart conditions and hot weather were a dangerous combination. This is especially true for heart patients older than 50 or overweight, said Gerald Fletcher, M.D., professor of medicine at the Mayo Clinic, in Jacksonville.
Last month, Phillip announced that he would be stepping down from public engagements, with Buckingham Palace stating the decision was fully supported by the queen.
The Duke of Edinburgh will continue to attend scheduled events up to the autumn, but will no longer accept invitations after this date, NewStatesman reported. Moving forward, Philip would continue to be associated with the 780 organizations of which he is patron, but he will be relinquishing his duty to appear publicly.
