The Prince of Dubai died Saturday morning at age 33 of a heart attack, the United Arab Emirates' official state news agency WAM announced.
Sheikh Rashid bin Mohammed was the eldest son of Dubai ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, who is also the vice president and prime minister of the UAE, USA Today reported
. Dubai is one of seven sheikhdoms that comprise the federated country.
"Today, I lost a best friend and a childhood companion...my dear brother Rashid. You will be missed," Sheikh Rashid's younger brother, crown prince Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed, wrote on Instagram in tribute.
During his life, Sheikh Rashid bin Mohammed served as the chairman of the UAE Olympic Committee from 2008 to 2012, and was active in philanthropic efforts related to child poverty, and graduated in 2002 from the Sandhurst Military Academy in England.
He was also an avid sportsman, winning gold medals in equestrian events at the Asian Olympics in 2006, The Independent (UK) reported
Over the weekend, Sheikh Rashid's coffin was carried into the Zabeel Mosque in Dubai, where hundreds of mourners gathered.
King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud of Saudi Arabia and Egyptian president Abdel Fattah el-Sisi offered words of condolences to the family.
