Lisa Marie Presley’s estranged husband has filed court documents asking for sole custody of their children amid concerns that Presley will relapse into drug and alcohol dependency following the suicide of her son, Benjamin Keough.
Michael Lockwood brought the issue up Thursday in court documents pertaining to their divorce. The couple split in 2016 after ten years of marriage. They are preparing to enter a divorce and custody trial scheduled for Aug. 3. Lockwood has now requested that the court strip Elvis Presley's daughter of primary custody of their 11-year-old twin daughters, Finley and Harper, according to The Blast.
"Lisa Marie Presley’s son shot and killed himself in her home (Although she was not there at the time.) With all due sympathy and respect, this creates a new and unaddressed twofold problem: the safety of the children and the greater likelihood of LMP to relapse into drug and alcohol dependency," the legal documents read.
Lockwood also voiced concerns that Presley, who battled an addiction to opioids and alcohol for years, may be a threat to herself and their children.
"The children told (him) that (LMP) walked around the house with a gun in her hand in 2017. There was at least one gun on the premises of her home at the time of her son’s suicide and it is unclear where the gun was kept or whether Finley and/or Harper might have access to this gun or others," he wrote in the filing.
"Thus, there is a significantly higher risk to the safety of the children which would ordinarily justify 100% physical custody to (me) at this time in such circumstances," he added.
Keough, who was the son of Presley and musician Danny Keough, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound earlier this month in Calabasas, California. On Wednesday Presley opened up about his "devastating" suicide.
"These are some of the darkest days of my family’s life. The shock of losing Ben has been devastating. Trying to put all the pieces together of all the possible whys has penetrated my soul. Each day I wake up I pray it will get better. Then, I think of my daughter and the pain she is going through as she was a doting mother," she wrote in a Facebook post.
"Ben’s father, Danny, who is completely lost, as Ben was his only son. Riley, so loving and so close to him; Harper and Finley, who absolutely adored Ben. Navarone, who struggles deeply with loss and death," she continued. "Rest in peace, Ben. You were loved."
