Turkey’s President Recip Tayyip Erdogan told women at a conference Monday that they can never be equal to men, and that their role is defined by their Islamic religion: motherhood.

"You cannot put women and men on an equal footing," Erdogan said at the women's conference in Istanbul, the BBC reported from the Anatolia news agency. "It is against nature."

"In the workplace, you cannot treat a man and a pregnant woman in the same way," Erdogan continued. “Our religion regards motherhood very highly.”

"Some people can understand this, while others can't. You cannot explain this to feminists because they don't not accept the concept of motherhood," AFP quoted the Turkish president.

Erdogan’s government has been criticized for limiting women’s civil liberties and also challenging the secular ideas of Turkey.

“Erdogan has also drawn the ire of feminist groups for declaring that every woman in Turkey should have three children and with proposals to limit abortion rights and the morning-after pill,” AFP wrote.

Erdogan was quoted by BBC as saying that women needed equal respect and not equality.

The Turkish president’s thoughts on women drew irate comments online.

Some on Twitter were curious about how women in Turkey reacted to the speech. This Bloomberg journalist tweeted:

Women’s rights activist Hulya Gulbahar told The Associated Press that the president’s comments were against the country’s constitution.

"Such comments by state officials which disregard equality between men and women play an important role in the rise of violence against women," Gulbahar said. "Such comments aim to make women's presence in public life — from politics to arts, from science to sports — debatable."
