An woman was left in tears when the pregnancy termination medication prescribed by her doctor was refused by a pharmacist at a Walgreens store in Arizona, where employees are permitted to not serve customers based on their religious or ethical beliefs. Another Walgreens location eventually filled the prescription.

Ending her pregnancy was not something Nicole Arteaga, a school teacher in Peoria, was doing by choice.

The 35-year-old Arteaga told Buzzfeed her doctor discovered last week that her nine-week-old baby had stopped growing and did not have a heartbeat.

Her doctor wrote out a prescription for medication that would terminate the pregnancy but when she visited a local Walgreens, she said the pharmacist refused to fill it.

"I asked him why he wouldn’t sell it to me, and he said it was his ethics," Arteaga said, noting that she had suffered a previous miscarriage and was being monitored by her doctor.

She recounted the incident in a post to Facebook, describing how she had to try and explain her situation to the pharmacist in front of her seven-year-old child and several other customers behind her.

"He has no idea what it's like to want nothing more than to carry a child to full term and be unable to do so," she wrote. "I left Walgreens in tears, ashamed and feeling humiliated by a man who knows nothing of my struggles but feels it is his right to deny medication prescribed to me by my doctor."

Arteaga managed to collect her prescription at another Walgreens branch after she contacted her doctor for help to ensure that staff were compliant, Newsweek reported.

The drugstore chain confirmed its company policy that allowed employees to refuse service to customers but added that staff were then required to refer the prescription to another pharmacist or manager.

Walgreens has come under fire in the past for ethical dilemmas.

Earlier this year the company was forced to shift its restroom policy to neutral after a customer complained she was discriminated against at the drugstore's Hollywood location in California.

Jessie Meehan was attending an LGBTQ Pride festival and popped into the branch to purchase a few items when she asked to use the woman's restroom but was told she could not as she looked like a man.
