Postal Worker Killed While Delivering Mail in Evening in Maryland

By    |   Monday, 25 November 2013 11:04 AM

A 26-year-old Maryland postal worker was shot to death Saturday evening while on the job in Landover. There are no suspects.

The Prince George County Police Department is investigating the shooting death of Tyson Jerome Barnette, who was shot before 7:30 p.m., authorities told CNN.

The U.S. Postal Inspection Service announced a $100,000 award for information connected with the shooting and police offered another $25,000 for tips leading to an arrest and an indictment in the case.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the letter carrier and his family during this very difficult time," Fredric Rolando, president of the National Association of Letter Carriers, told CNN. "The nation's letter carriers deliver the mail in every community throughout the country. This tragic incident highlights the need in all operational decisions about how and when mail is delivered to give priority consideration to the safety of these dedicated public servants."

Postal workers gathered in Landover on Sunday for a vigil, reported WJZ-TV.

"That was one of my employees," Sonja Carmichael, Barnette's supervisor told the television station. "I loved him like he was one of my own, so it really hurts me to my heart."

Some of the vigil's participants told WJZ-TV that they questioned the delivery hours of postal workers as possibly putting them in dangerous situations.

"Why are we out here this late? There is no reason why somebody can't get their mail at 2 p.m. the next day," one unidentified postal worker told the television station. "Why do they need it at 8 o'clock that day?"

The incident marked the second time in five months that a Maryland postal worker died while on duty. In June, Bruce Robert Deutser, 62, died while delivering mail when his vehicle and a pick-up truck crashed in the 3100 block of Monkton Road in Baltimore County, reported the Baltimore Sun.

Authorities told the Sun that Deutser was pronounced dead at the scene after arriving at the accident. Police said Deutser was slowing down to make a left turn when a pick-up truck tried to pass him on the left side. The truck slammed into the left corner of the mail vehicle, forcing it to roll over and throwing Deutser into the road.
