Port Columbus Shooting: Knife-Wielding Man Killed at Airport

By    |   Thursday, 08 Jan 2015 11:50 AM

A police shooting at Port Columbus Airport in Ohio left a knife-wielding  man dead and authorities searching for answers about his odd behavior just before the Wednesday incident.

Authorities identified the dead man as 41-year-old Hashim Hanif Ibn Abdul-Rasheed, reported the Columbus Dispatch. He had arrived at the airport about 15 miles east of downtown Columbus around 1 p.m., then illegally parked his SUV and went inside to try to purchase an airline ticket to an undisclosed location using a woman's identification.

When Abdul-Rasheed returned to his vehicle, police had arrived to tow it away. Police said he produced a knife and after lunged at officers before he was shot.

"There was a threat, and we were responding to that," David Whitaker, a Columbus Regional Airport Authority vice president, told Fox News. "It was indeed a confrontation. We don't think that there's an ongoing threat at the moment. We believe the situation is contained as I've described."

Sgt. Rich Weiner, a Columbus police spokesman, told the Dispatch that Abdul-Rasheed "barely missed" one of the police officers with the knife before they opened fire.

Weiner said the man then dropped to the ground, but jumped back to his feet and engaged officers again before another officer fired at him a second time. Weiner said more knives were found on the man after the shooting.

"He came at the officers, kept walking in a confrontational manner toward the officers, backed them up probably about 30 yards," Shriner told the newspaper.

"The officers also discovered items on the suspect which prompted them to contact the Columbus Fire Bomb Squad, which also searched the suspect's vehicle," airport officials said in a statement. "Suspicious items were removed from the scene."

Jim Shriner, a tow-truck driver who drove up as the confrontation was taking place, told the Dispatch he saw the man ignore police commands and lung at officers before the final shots.

Weiner told WBNS-TV that the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene. He said items from his vehicle were taken into custody.
