A Bulgarian cat named Pooh was given a pair of bionic legs after a roadside accident left him without his back paws.

Passers-by found the 1-year-old stray cat severely injured near Pleven in April, Reuters reported. A few months later, a surgeon, Vladislav Zlatinov gave Pooh implants where his back legs used to be. The cat has recovered nicely from the surgery and is now getting used to the prosthetics.

The implant surgery has only been done in Great Britain until now. Veterinary surgeon Noel Fitzpatrick gave a cat named Oscar new hind legs in 2009, Reuters reported. Since operating on Pooh, Zlatinov also implanted a bionic paw into Steven, an 8-month-old cat. He has several felines on a waiting list, according to The Associated Press.

Zlatinov learned to do the operations through publications in scientific journals, and he built the custom parts by hand. The implants are connected to prostheses so they can be changed like shoes, the AP said. Zlatinov said that Pooh know the prostheses are there and that he cleans them like he would his own legs.

“We’re very proud,” Zlatinov said to the AP, watching Pooh chase a toy mouse. “It was quite a success ... it gives hope to other patients.” The leg-like prosthetics are more effective for most cats than wheeled prosthetics, which can only move well on flat, dry ground.

After the surgery, Pooh was unable to return to his life outside, so a new home is being sought for him, with several families already having applied.
