Politico Testing Paywall System in Six States

Wednesday, 19 June 2013 05:58 PM EDT

Politico is testing a paywall system to see if its readers will pay for its content. The political journalism site began testing the idea in six states and internationally in May.

A note to the Politico staffers posted on their site said the experiment will last six months and be tested in Iowa, North Dakota, Vermont, Mississippi, New Mexico, and Wyoming.

Urgent: Should the NSA Spy on Americans? Vote Here Now.

What we will look for with this experiment is whether not not we can bring in more revenue through paying subrscibrers than those we lose as a results of any decline in traffic,” the note read.

It went on to say: “The decision to test a broader subscription model represents a shift in our thinking. ... It is increasingly clear that readers are more willing than we once thought to pay for content they value and enjoy. With more than 300 media companies now charging for online content in the U.S., the notion of paying to read expensive-to-produce journalism is no longer that exotic for sophisticated consumers.”

Politico already offers paid content through its Politico Pro Offering. But if there turns out to be an opportunity to sell content to the general readership, it looks likely they will take it.
