Planned Parenthood Plans Court Battle Against Indiana

Monday, 02 May 2011 01:05 PM EDT

Planned Parenthood of Indiana promised to sue the state if Gov. Mitch Daniels signs a bill — as he’s expected to do — that eliminates federal funding for the agency.

The governor could sign the bill this week, WTRV-TV Channel 6 in Indianapolis reported.

If Daniel signs the bill, Indiana would become the first state to defund Planned Parenthood.

A number of other states are already following Indiana’s lead on the issue.

When asked about the future of Planned Parenthood in Indiana, Daniels responded, "It's up to them. The legislature decided to say that any organization — and they're not the only one, just the biggest one — that's involved in abortions should not be supported with taxpayer dollars and that's a principle that apparently a huge majority of Hoosiers agree with."

Margaret Lawrence Banning, vice president of Planned Parenthood's public policy, said the agency will go to court to try to and block what it called "the alarming erosion of public health policy in our state."

"Yes, we will continue to fight it. We're planning to file an injunction in court as soon as the governor signs it," Banning said.
