Pierce Brosnan Not 'Good Enough' as James Bond To Watch His Own Films

Pierce Brosnan Not 'Good Enough' as James Bond To Watch His Own Films

Actor Pierce Brosnan  had "no desire" to watch himself in his most famous character as James Bond, saying he struggled to understand the role of the British super spy and was "never good enough" in comparison to others who played the role.

Brosnan appeared as the spy in such Bond flicks as "GoldenEye" in 1995, "Tomorrow Never Dies" in 1997, "The World is Not Enough" in 1999 and "Die Another Day" in 2002.

Brosnan made the comments in a story in The Telegraph focused on his new movie "Love Punch."

"It was a very hard one to grasp the meaning of, for me," Brosnan told The Telegraph. "The violence was never real, the brute force of the man was never palpable. It was quite tame, and the characterization didn’t have a follow-through of reality, it was surface. But then that might have had to do with my own insecurities in playing him as well."

The James Bond role was most notably played by Sean Connery and Roger Moore, among others. Brosnan told The Telegraph that he believed his Bond was "never good enough" in comparison.

"I felt I was caught in a time warp between Roger and Sean," said Brosnan.

Ben Child of The Guardian agreed with Brosnan's self-assessment, saying that while his Bond helped reinvigorate the character for the 1990s, overall, his portrayal was "lackadaisical and smug."

"Rewatching the films, even Brosnan fans must surely accept that he was never the new Connery, but rather a sort-of strangely flat Roger Moore – without even the charm, screen presence and natural gift for comedy that old raised eyebrow delivered in spades," wrote Child.

Child said Brosnan, and other Bond actors, currently suffer from Daniel Craig's portrayal, which takes the spy in a new direction.

"What has happened since shows just how much time can color perceptions," Child wrote. "Craig's starker, more human take on the character has brought Bond a newfound cultural relevancy. While the older 007 movies were routinely spoofed in jokey outings such as the Austin Powers series, few have tried to send up 2006's 'Casino Royale' or its successors."

"Love Punch," a comedy in which Brosnan co-stars with Academy Award winner Emma Thompson, premieres in England this week.

"It was enormous fun," Brosnan told The Telegraph. "No acting required. Just show up and have a good time, really."
