A Pierce Brosnan ad in India has led Delhi health officials to threaten the actor with fines and jail time because the product he plugged sometimes contains tobacco.

Brosnan’s image was used 18 months ago in television and newspaper ads to endorse Pan Bahar, a chewing mixture that can be addictive and sometimes contains tobacco among its ingredients.

Delhi officials want Brosnan to explain why he appeared in the ads to avoid the fines and jail time, The Guardian reported. The campaign was suspended shortly after it first appeared, and Brosnan condemned the use of his image at that time.

Brosnan told People his contract was only for a type of "breath freshener/tooth whitener" and not for the product that was eventually advertised, which is red in color and is thought to cause bad health and could possibly be carcinogenic.

He also said Pan Bahar “grossly manipulated” the ads to make it look like he endorsed their entire line of products, and that their actions were “in violation of my contract,” People reported.

“Having endured, in my own personal life, the loss of my first wife and daughter as well as numerous friends to cancer, I am fully committed to supporting women’s healthcare and research programs that improve human health and alleviate suffering,” Brosnan told People at the time.

The company denied misleading Brosnan, The Guardian reported. Delhi health officials have said Brosnan needs to respond to their notice and explain his actions.
