A Philadelphia state trooper who pulled over four men traveling on I-76 Tuesday morning was shot when two of them then fled in the vehicle and struck a school bus, resulting in a fire.

According to ABC News affiliate WPVI-TV, Mayor Michael Nutter said the trooper was "awake, alert and talking" and in "good spirits" after being transported to Hahnemann University Hospital.

All four of the suspects were taken into custody following the altercation, The Associated Press reported.

A police official told reporters that two of the four males were escorted out of the car, were patted down, and sat on the curb after being pulled over on I-76.

The driver and one other male, still in the car, suddenly took off, turning onto I-676 eastbound, and slamming into the rear of a school bus.

The suspects allegedly exited the car, and shot the trooper while fleeing on foot.

The school bus was reportedly empty when it was rocked by the suspects' car, and the driver was said to be uninjured.

Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf released a statement about the incident praising the police for their bravery.

"My thoughts and prayers are with the Pennsylvania State Police Trooper shot on Interstate 676 in the line of duty today. I received an update from Acting Commissioner Blocker a short time ago and I am relieved to learn that the trooper is in stable condition at a hospital in Philadelphia. Our men and women in law enforcement put their lives on the line each day to protect us, and we owe them a debt of gratitude. The shooter was swiftly taken into custody by the Pennsylvania State Police. No further details are available at this time."
