Phil Robertson Similar to John the Baptist, Preacher Son Says

By    |   Monday, 28 July 2014 11:56 AM EDT

Phil Robertson is like a modern-day John the Baptist, said the "Duck Dynasty" patriarch's preacher son in a May speech that's still stirring up comments online.

Alan Robertson, the only beardless Robertson son, made the comparison at a May 22 "Watchmen on the Wall" ministry conference that was sponsored by the Family Research Council in Washington, D.C.

"My dad, Phil Robertson, has the heart and the mindset of a prophet," Alan Robertson told the audience while showing an image of John the Baptist on his PowerPoint presentation. "He's most compared to John the Baptist . . . Here is what people have imagined [John the Baptist] to look like and it looks sort of familiar to dad — long hair, long beard, naturally camouflaged, he ate off the land and he pointed people to Christ."

"He was a voice of one calling into the wilderness: 'prepare the way for the Lord. Make straight paths for him' . . . How many people make their way out to my dad just to talk about the good news of Jesus Christ? So, he was a lot like John the Baptist," he continued.

Phil Robertson faced considerable backlash for expressing his conservative views on homosexuality in a December GQ interview. He was even suspended from the family's A&E reality show briefly until the network succumbed to a public protest for his return.

Phil Robertson later commented on all the backlash over his comments in a May 30 interview with Fox's Sean Hannity.

"Surprised? Not at all. Blessed are you when men hate you, when they exclude you, when they insult you and reject your name as evil, Jesus said, because of the Son of Man," he said. "Leap for joy because great is your reward in Heaven. It goes with the territory, spiritual warfare. There is a Satan out there, an evil one, and if anyone that looks at our culture doesn't believe it, I would simply say, what, are you blind? It's pretty rough out there."
