Harvard Prof. Peterson: Hold Students Accountable

By    |   Monday, 09 September 2013 06:42 PM EDT

A top Harvard professor says the United States has to get back to the basics of education and make students accountable for learning.

"I'd hold students accountable … high school students, especially," Paul Peterson, professor of government at Harvard University, told "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

"They should be told, okay, you've got to learn your math, you've got to learn your English, you've got to learn your history, and this is the test that we're all going to expect you to take."

Story continues below.

Peterson, who co-authored the new book, "Endangering Prosperity: A Global View of the American School," said the decline of the U.S. education system compared to other nations cuts across social and economic lines.

"This is not an issue of the inner city. This is an issue that goes right into the heart of suburbia. Our suburban schools are not teaching our kids up to the highest level," he said.

"Our neighbors to the north, [Canada] are doing much better, the Germans are, the French are, the English are — it's all over the world."
