Rep. Peter King is speaking out as the New York State Parole Board prepares to release Robert Hayes, convicted in 1974 of killing a police officer.

NYC Transit Police Officer Sidney Thompson was a 37-year-old father of two shot to death by Hayes in 1973. Hayes, who was linked at the time to the Black Liberation Army, has been in prison for 44 years.

"This decision by the Parole Board is a disgrace. And it follows its equally disgraceful decision to free 3-time cop killer and Black Liberation Army member Herman Bell less than 2 months ago," King said in a statement. "When is this going to end? When are political leaders and the liberal media going to cry out and denounce this shameful indifference to cops' lives?"

The congressman observed that law enforcement officers are the only thing that stands between the law-abiding and the lawless.

"These men and women in blue are the ones who put their lives on the line to protect all the rest of us. Society has the absolute moral obligation to stand by these brave officers and their families," King said. "Tragically the NYS Parole Board is continually failing to demonstrate common decency or show any sense of justice."

The parole board’s action is the latest example of the “war against cop” sentiment in the United States, King added.

“This war against police — whether in the streets or in the offices of the Parole Board or in editorial board offices — is not about race, color or creed it is about a mindset against the men and women in blue. And it must end. America must stand with the Police!!”
