New Perry Commercial Attacks 'Obama's War on Religion'

Wednesday, 07 Dec 2011 12:27 PM

Texas Gov. Rick Perry’s campaign is airing a new TV ad in Iowa accusing President Barack Obama of waging war against religion.

“I’m not ashamed to admit that I’m a Christian,” Perry says. “But you don’t need to be in the pew every Sunday to know there’s something wrong in this country when gays can serve openly in the military but our kids can’t openly celebrate Christmas or pray in school.

“As president, I’ll end Obama’s war on religion,” Perry continues. “And I’ll fight against liberal attacks on our religious heritage.”

The 30-second spot, aimed at winning over religious conservatives in the run-up to the Iowa caucuses Jan. 3, is similar to another that aired last week. In the previous ad, Perry equated faith with strong American leadership and declared that he is not afraid to talk openly about his own faith.

The new ad concludes with a similar message: “Faith made American strong. It make America strong again,” Perry says.

The Texas governor is running fourth in Iowa behind former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, and Texas Rep. Ron Paul, according to two recent polls.

One poll has Perry even with Michele Bachmann with 6 percent support among likely voters in the Iowa caucuses Jan. 3 and another has him at 11 percent. Perry is hoping for a respectable showing in Iowa to keep his campaign alive.
