Passenger Discovered Dead After Plane Lands in Salt Lake City

By    |   Wednesday, 13 February 2013 08:52 AM

Officials are investigating the death of a passenger on a United Airlines flight from Denver to Salt Lake City International Airport on Sunday night.

After landing, another passenger noticed the man was unconscious. He and others tried to revive the man by performing CPR in the plane's aisle.

Airport spokeswoman Barbara Gann confirmed the passenger's death, but declined to release his name or age, the Salt Lake Tribune reported. The flight was United Airlines Flight 5596, Gann said.

Local Utah-based news outlet KSL reported the passenger was a man who appeared to be in his 30s.

KSL reported that Army Reserve medic and passenger Jared Noall, of Ogden, Utah, said he heard a man snoring loudly on the plane two rows behind him, about 15 to 20 minutes before the plane landed.

The snoring eventually stopped, but he didn't think anything was amiss.

Noall said when the plane landed he turned around to look at the man and immediately thought he was dead.

"You could tell something was wrong. I asked, 'Hey, sir, are you awake?'" Noall told KSL. "I shook him a bit, trying to see if I could get a response out of him. We checked his throat for a pulse, and it wasn't there, so we laid him down in the aisle and start CPR."

Noall said he and two others performed CPR until paramedics arrived. The man was later pronounced dead.

"It sort of sucks because you always want to save people's lives, but what can you do?" Noall said. "Everyone came together to try to help, though. We did what we could."

Gann said the man is not from Utah, but did not know if he is from the Denver area or if that city was just a stop along his way.

Airport police and the state medical examiner’s office are looking into the cause of death. Gann declined to comment further until the investigation is complete.
