Panera will remove all artificial additives from the food on its menu by 2016, including artificial flavors, colors, flavors, and preservatives.

The announcement was made by the fast food chain on Tuesday amid growing concerns by many in the public about the ingredients used in food, USA Today reported.

"Panera was founded on the belief that quick food could be quality food," Ron Shaich, founder, chairman and CEO, said in a press release. "We started by baking bread from fresh dough each day in our cafes. That commitment led to others – like our early decision to remove artificial trans-fats, post calories on menu boards and invest in serving chicken raised without antibiotics."

"Panera's forward-looking policy on antibiotics has made it an industry leader," Erik Olson, senior strategic director for health and food for the Natural Resources Defense Council, added in the release.

"The company has been purchasing chicken raised without antibiotics for more than a decade – and over the years expanded to roasted turkey, ham, and sausage," Olson continued. "We support their newest commitment to remove artificial additives. We look forward to working with them to ensure all their ingredients are essential and safe."

According to some food safety watchdogs, such as the Centers for Science in the Public Interest, the consumption of dyes frequently used in foods is tied to behavioral problems in children, CBS News reported.

Panera has yet to say how much the change will cost the company and if it will have any effect on menu prices.

As noted by Consumerist.com, among the additives being eliminated by Panera are: calcium disodium EDTA from horseradish; maltodextrin, potassium lactate from Citrus Pepper Chicken; and tapioca Dextrin from summer corn chowder.
