A Palm Springs shooting suspect was arrested after two police officers in the California resort town were fatally wounded over the weekend while responding to a family disturbance.

According to CNN, the officers were identified as Jose Gilbert Vega, 63, and Lesley Zerebny, 27. Vega was a 35-year veteran who was headed for retirement while Zerebny — new to the police force — had just gotten back from maternity leave.

“I have two officers that are now looking down on us from above, and our police department is now walking in the footsteps of two additional heroes,” said Bryan Reyes, Palm Springs Police Chief.

According to reports, the two officers had tried to reason with a man who appeared very flustered, asking him to step outside of his residence, but the man shot at police from behind his front door instead.

Vega and Zerebny were both rushed to the hospital following the shooting, where they ultimately died.

The suspect has been identified as John Felix, 26, a resident of Palm Springs who was arrested early Sunday, hours after the fatal shooting that also injured an identified third officer, CNN noted.

“It was simple family disturbance, and he elected to open fire on a few of the guardians of the city,” Reyes said.

The 911 call was made about mid-day after a woman reported that her son, the suspect, was causing a disturbance, police said, according to AOL. It was then that officers responded to the call.

After the shooting, several additional police officers rushed to the scene and set up positions outside the house, as Felix had barricaded himself inside while continuing to fire shots, AOL noted.

Once the SWAT team fired “chemical agents into the residence,” police were finally able to subdue the suspect, arrest him and take him to a nearby hospital to be treated.

Felix faces two counts of murder, AOL noted.

Members of the community paid their respects to the two officers killed by stopping by a memorial located outside the police department. Hundreds of people also attended a vigil Sunday night, where they heard from the families of the officers.

“We would like to thank the community for coming together for us,” said Vega’s daughter. “We appreciate the community support and for continuing to have us in your prayers.”
