Pakistan International Airlines left two coffins containing corpses at New York's JFK Airport, causing difficulties for the families of the deceased.

The two coffins were scheduled to be flown to Lahore on Oct. 28 on Pakistan International Airlines' last New York-Lahore flight before the route was suspended, the BBC reported. Etihad Airlines later transported one of the coffins, while the other one remains in the U.S. and may be buried in Maryland at relatives' request.

PIA blamed ground crews for the mistake, but the families affected were unhappy with the airline's response, the BBC reported.

The airline said it "regrets the inconvenience caused due to negligence on part of the airline's ground handling agency … and expresses its sympathies with the family members of the deceased persons." PIA further said it would pay for the transfer expenses incurred, although family members said no one from the airline had contacted them about arrangements or payments, the BBC reported.

The remains were left at JFK for 14 hours while family members tried to locate them, the Telegraph reported. Muslim burial customs say a body should be buried as soon after death as possible.

The airline has had many recent difficulties over the past year, including a pilot leaving a trainee at the controls while he napped, heroin being found on a flight into Heathrow, and a goat being slaughtered on the runway after an accident to ward off bad luck, the Telegraph reported.

The airline reportedly loses about $450 million a year and may be declared bankrupt and shut down in the near future, the Telegraph reported.
