Ozzy Osbourne Online Knighthood Petition Gains Momentum

Ozzy Osbourne Online Knighthood Petition Gains Momentum

By    |   Monday, 05 May 2014 12:12 PM EDT

An online petition trying to drum up support to get Queen Elizabeth to grant former Black Sabbath frontman Ozzy Osbourne knighthood has gained more than 11,000 signatures and is growing.

The online petition on Causes.com was taken out by a Helen Maidiotis, saying that the Birmingham, England, native has contributed to the music industry for more than 40 years.

"Birmingham born John Michael Osbourne has been entertaining and inspiring a great many throughout his life, he has been a huge success worldwide with many successful albums with both Black Sabbath as well as in his solo career," the petition states. "Now in his mid-60's, I believe the time has come for him to receive a Knighthood. Please consider Mr. Osbourne for this honour as it is well deserved and long overdue."

"Our campaign has reached Buckingham Palace, as a friend of mine had sent off letters explaining about our battle for Ozzy's knighthood – and they have replied positively," Maidiotis told the Birmingham Mail newspaper. "As Black Sabbath (is) set to perform at Hyde Park, London, on July 4, it would be a fitting tribute to Ozzy if we were to reach our target in the days following their performance."

To make sure she had her bases covered, Maidiotis even started a Facebook page to encourage Osbourne fans to sign the petition.

Maidiotis, described by the Birmingham Mail as a "heavy metal devotee," told the newspaper that she had hoped to get all of Black Sabbath's band members knighthood but felt singling out Osbourne would have better odds.

"I intend to see this right through to the end, whatever the outcome," said Maidiotis. "Unfortunately, David Spooner (who is in charge of honours in the UK) said that it is highly unlikely the whole band would get a knighthood and that I would have a better chance with a single member of the band. So I chose Ozzy Osbourne as he is the voice of Sabbath."
