Owner Claims His Dog Shot Him in Leg During Ride in Truck

At least one dog in Florida isn't living up to the whole "man's best friend" thing. Its owner claims the dog accidently shot him in the leg during a truck ride.

According to reports, the victim, Gregory Dale Lanier, 35, of Frostproof, said his dog kicked a loaded gun that was on the floor of his truck on Saturday, causing the weapon to discharge one round that wound up hitting him in the leg.

Lanier told police that he didn't think the gun was loaded at the time, adding that he initially believed the bullet came from a .380 pistol and was surprised to learn that it was a 9-mm round that hit him.

He said that he was driving on State Road 17 North "when his dog kicked his unloaded . . . pistol causing it to fire and the bullet struck his leg. Lanier said he heard boom, saw smoke and felt a burning in his leg," Sebring Police Cmdr. Steve Carr told reporters.

Lanier's injury was not serious according to police, who deemed the incident accidental.

This isn't the first time a man has been shot by his dog.

In late 2011, a Utah hunter, while duck hunting on the state's Great Salt Lake, stepped out of his boat to retrieve a decoy, at which time his golden retriever touched against a loaded 12-gauge shotgun sending 27 pellets into the man’s buttocks about 10 feet away.
The 46-year-old victim, whose name was not released, reportedly recovered from his injuries.

More recently, in September of last year, a French hunter had to have his right hand amputated after his four-legged partner inadvertently jumped on to him to give a "cuddle," triggering his shotgun to fire into his master's hand, reported the BBC.

"It wasn't the dog's fault - and he's adorable!" the victim told France Bleu radio.
"[Then] he jumped on me to give me a cuddle, I think. As he jumped, he put a paw on the gun."
