Kim Heaton, the athletic department's director of human resources, stated in a letter dated June 20 that Ohio State's head cheerleading coach Lenee Buchman did not properly report a complaint and the coaching staff was required to attend sexual harassment education session in July.
According to records The Lantern obtained, Bumbrey and Hollins were fired "for cause" on May 23.
The Columbus Dispatch reported that cheerleaders accused Hollins of making sexual jokes and at times slapping male students on the butts and tapping their testicles. They accused Bumbrey of making inappropriate remarks to the female cheerleaders, including nicknaming one "Fornicate."
The cheerleaders said Bumbrey routinely talked about the size of the female cheerleaders' butts and made remarks such as "she always has her legs spread" when one cheerleader was in a compromising position during routines.
According to records, investigators said Hollins had been investigated for similar charges in 2006 and should have known better.
"Ohio State University has no tolerance for this type of behavior," Ohio State spokesman Gary Lewis Jr. told the Dispatch. "The university conducted a complete and thorough investigation and found that the behaviors of Hollins and Bumbrey were inconsistent with university values and violated university policies."
The fired coach said that sexual joking among the coaches and team members was common, and comments they made to cheerleaders were never taken seriously.
The Lantern noted that Bumbrey was a 1995 graduate of Ohio State and had been a member of the coaching staff since August 2009 and was an OSU cheerleader from 1992-95. Hollins was in his third stint as a university cheerleading coach and was a 1994 OSU graduate.
