Oscar ratings were down more than 15 percent to an all-time low according to early estimates for the Academy Awards that was filled with politics as well as the best films of the year.

The 90th Academy Awards averaged 26.5 million live plus same day viewers, down 19 percent from 32.9 million who viewed the show in 2017, Deadline reported. The website said the show drew an 18.9 Live+Same Day rating in metered homes, also an all-time low and down 16 percent from last year's 22.4 rating.

The awards show has never fallen under 32 million viewers and a 21 rating in metered homes before, taking the program to historic new norms – in the wrong direction, Deadline wrote.

Variety reported that Oscars telecast averaged a 6.4 rating in valued adults 18-49 demographic and 24.4 million viewers, compared to the 8.7 rating and 29.1 million viewers in 2017. The celebrity publication said ABC will likely see a rise in the numbers once the final data become available.

Some pointed to the predictability of the winners, the four-hour length of the program, the weak box office this past year as reasons for the slide, Variety said.

Others, though, blamed the increase of politics and social issues being injected into the show as a big reason for the ratings dump.

"Every year there seems like there is an issue that Hollywood has chosen to lecture the country on," media consultant and former network executive Preston Beckman told the Los Angeles Times. "When the viewing public feels that Hollywood is going to use this to forward its own political agenda there is a significant part of the country that is going to say, 'I'm not going to sit here for four hours and be lectured to.'"

That sentiment was echoed on social media.
