The Oscars new “achievement in popular film category” revealed this week – along with changes to condense the annual show – is being roundly slammed by film writers and others on social media as a desperate attempt by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to boost its dwindling television ratings.

The Hollywood Reporter said that the academy's board of governors announced it will create the new "outstanding achievement in popular film category," but hasn’t revealed the criteria for the category.

"Some will complain that adding such a category cheapens the prestige of the Oscars, making it more like the People's Choice Awards or MTV Movie & TV Awards, but that is old-world thinking," THR said in defending the move.

"More than the length of the telecast or the name of the host, Oscar ratings have been shown to correlate with the popularity of the nominated films among the general public. And the gulf between what the public buys tickets to see and what the Academy nominates and awards has never been greater."

Some have pointed to the hit "Black Panther," the critically-acclaimed superhero movie, as one of the inspirations for the category, but IndieWire's Anne Thompson said the movie didn’t need the new category to qualify Oscar recognition.

"This year, for example, Disney and Marvel's 'Black Panther' had an excellent chance of making it to the Best Picture and many other races," Thompson said. "Now we may never know if it had a chance to earn its rightful place at the top of the Hollywood firmament, as it could be sequestered in the meaningless 'popular film' category. This is a damn shame."

The academy also announced that it was limiting the award show's broadcast to three hours and moving the airdate of the awards from late February to early February. Next year's telecast will remain Feb. 24, but the 2020 telecast will air Feb. 9, according to THR.

Criticism of the new category was heavy on social media.
