The Oscars are going to see some changes at the 2019 ceremony, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced Wednesday.

Several of the changes — cutting the ceremony to three hours and adding a new category for achievement in "popular film" — are designed to increase viewership in the annual Hollywood event.

Shortening the ceremony will achieve "a more accessible Oscars for our viewers worldwide," the Academy reported in a letter to its members, NBC News reported.

"To honor all 24 award categories, we will present select categories live, in the Dolby Theatre, during commercial breaks (categories to be determined). The winning moments will then be edited and aired later in the broadcast," the letter said.

According to E! Online, the new addition, an "Outstanding Achievement in Popular Film" award, may be akin to a People’s Choice award for popular film genres such as sci-fi, superhero, action, or comedy box office bonanzas.

The Oscars have suffered a sharp decline in viewership in recent years. This year’s awards, which aired in March, lasted nearly four hours and saw a 19 percent drop in viewership from the 2017 awards. The 2017 Oscars earned its second-lowest ratings in history.

One final change the Academy is making is to move the ceremony up from March to a Feb. 9 telecast date.

"We have heard from many of you about improvements needed to keep the Oscars and our Academy relevant in a changing world," Academy President John Bailey and CEO Dawn Hudson said in their letter, NBC reported. "The Board of Governors took this charge seriously. We are excited about these steps, and look forward to sharing more details with you."
